Ideology and masks

A: When we come up with songs, we spend more time not on how to perform it or what words to choose, but on the idea: what it should be about. You see, there is so much music in the world, so many performers who have already been before us. Everything has already been said. The only thing you can do to stand out now, when every second person can write and read rap, is the approach and development of the theme. Authenticity is important. We write what we have seen, lived, and so on.

In general, we are often asked the question "why are we wearing masks?" We want to say that any of us could be under the mask: every average Kazakhstani boy. Someone has the same problems.

In 2021, we worked at the Zhibek Zholy bazaar in iron street containers. It's very cold there in winter. And you know the Almaty frost: very humid, plus the container attracted the cold. It penetrated right to the bones. Because of this, the skin on our faces cracked badly. One of those days we were supposed to shoot a video. I said: "Izvyanki, but I don't want to go out like this." So we put on masks and filmed everything in them.

B: At first it was dictated by circumstances, and then it became an image. Now we don’t see the point in removing them. We feel more comfortable this way. When we put on masks, we unconsciously become different people.

A: It's like an alter ego. Not like a psychological deviation.

B: Yeah, like in comics, when Spiderman puts on a mask. You kind of become a hero. You feel like you can do anything. Maybe it's self-hypnosis and we can do all this without masks, but we feel more comfortable this way. Plus it's cool: you can write songs and no one will recognize you on the street or in a store.
