"We really know how to fight this": Dosayev on smog in Almaty

At a meeting with residents of the Medeu district, Almaty Akim Yerbolat Dosayev spoke about plans to improve air quality in the city.

“We have developed a program for 2025-2027 and hope that by reducing industrial emissions and regulating the transport sector we will be able to achieve tangible results,” Dosayev noted.

Following the example of major megacities around the world, low-emission zones may be created in Almaty. It is assumed that entry into such zones for cars that do not meet modern environmental standards will be subject to a fee.

"We have also prepared and will submit for discussion to the public council and maslikhat the issue of creating low-emission zones. We will distribute the city. The only question is how to administer, that is, issues of payment, residency. We need to divide all this so that it does not turn into a big mess," Dosayev said.

He also commented on the words of five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen that Almaty is a polluted city.

"I also spoke with Magnus Carlsen when the World Chess Championship was held here in December 2022. As he said, he had different feelings associated with visiting our wonderful mountains and in the city. Unfortunately, especially in winter, during the heating season, we have a significant deterioration in the state of the environment. I want to say that we really know how to deal with this," Dosayev concluded.

Let us recall that earlier World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen noted the high level of air pollution in Almaty, especially in winter. At the same time, the chess player emphasized that just half an hour's drive from the city there are mountains that make a completely different impression.

We also wrote that parents of children in Almaty appealed to the president because of the dirty air in the city.
