The court sentenced Kairat Kudaibergen and Diky Arman in the case of the January 2022 events
In Almaty, a court sentenced former city council deputy Kairat Kudaibergen and Arman Dzhumageldiev (Wild Arman) in the case of mass riots in January 2022. Kairat was sentenced to 8 years in prison, and Arman to 20 years in prison. This was reported by Informburo.
The former head of the fifth department of the KNB, Ruslan Iskakov, was also sentenced in the case of the January events. He received 15 years and 6 months of imprisonment. He was also stripped of his state awards and title.
Dikiy Arman was detained on January 7, 2022, Kairat Kudaibergen – 2.5 months later. In July 2022, Kudaibergen was stripped of his parliamentary mandate and expelled from the Amanat party.
According to the investigation, Kudaibergen, together with Dzhumageldiev, organized a gathering of people in the Almaty hotel "Kazakhstan", called for uniting around Dzhumageldiev, supporting him and putting forward unified demands to the authorities. Kudaibergen also divided people into groups of 10 people and gave instructions to tie white armbands on their sleeves.
In September 2023, it was reported that the trial would be held behind closed doors for the safety of the victims.
It was also said that there are 44 defendants in the case. They were charged with abuse of power or official authority, creation, leadership and participation in an organized criminal group, robbery, illegal deprivation of liberty, organization and participation in mass riots in January 2022, banditry.
Wild Arman was charged with illegal deprivation of liberty, which resulted in the death of the victim through negligence, carrying a weapon and participating in mass riots with aggravating circumstances.
