Klimkin: With the arrival of Trump, a new era will begin, driven by tougher and more pragmatic thinking
“A new era is beginning – this is the era of Trump, and he really wants it… It means new thinking, very tough, very pragmatic. It means different thinking in the US and in the world,” Klimkin noted.
He added that for Trump, the issue of the war in Ukraine is important, but it is one of many that he will have to deal with.
“Of course, for them, our war is both a problem and a challenge. One of my American friends calculated that Trump said 34 times at various rallies that he would definitely work on this. This is actually a matter of respect for him personally. A special issue for Trump. But we understand that there will be many more issues than ‘us,’” said the former Foreign Minister.
According to him, the US president’s team is currently working on a “call to Putin.” But this does not mean that Trump will compromise with him, because he is “not a fan of compromise.”
Klimkin recalled that Trump and Putin “have scores – this includes the Middle East, energy resources, and energy stability.”
“He (Trump – ed.) wants to win this war. He wants to end it and show the world that in this way he prevented a third world war. He wants to be Trump the peacemaker. He understands the demand for peace that exists in the world. Peace that is unstable, not certain,” Klimkin noted.
