Two police officers given suspended sentences for torture in Almaty
In Almaty, a verdict was passed on police officers who were accused of torture. They were found guilty, the press service of the city prosecutor's office reported . The case against the police officers was investigated by the special prosecutor of Almaty.
"It has been proven that on March 29, 2023, in the apartment of a relative of one of the guilty police officers, torture was used against the delivered citizen in order to obtain a confession from him in committing theft of someone else's property. As a result of the illegal actions of the police officers, the victim suffered physical suffering," the report says.
The defendants pleaded guilty. As a result, taking into account the procedural agreement on the admission of guilt, the court sentenced the defendants to three years and six months probation, establishing probation control, depriving them of special ranks and the right to work in the civil service. The sentence entered into legal force.
“Based on the prosecutor’s office’s submission, 10 police officers, including five heads of structural divisions, were brought to disciplinary responsibility for the lack of control over the activities of their subordinates and improper performance of official duties,” the Prosecutor General’s Office added.
