Feminists Gulzada Serzhan and Zhanar Sekerbaeva to stand trial in Almaty
On February 18 and 19, the Specialized Interdistrict Court for Administrative Offenses of Almaty will hold administrative trials of the founders of the feminist organization Feminita, Gulzada Serzhan and Zhanar Sekerbayeva. This is reported by the publication "Vlast".
They are charged under Part 9 of Article 489 of the Code of Administrative Offences – "Managing the activities of public and religious associations not registered in accordance with the procedure established by the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as whose activities have been suspended or prohibited." This is related to the legal event they held last week in Almaty, which the chairperson of the "Kazakhstan Union of Parents" Bagila Baltabayeva and her associates tried to disrupt.
Zhanar Sekerbaeva does not agree with the opening of an administrative case. She also does not understand why the case was opened against the victims, and not against those who tried to disrupt their event. "They quickly filed a case against us. In fact, we are not a public association. We are not guilty of simply holding our legal event. On the contrary, they broke into our place for two days," she said.
Administrative courts will be held online. This article provides for a fine of 100 MCI.
- On February 13, Feminita held an event, which Bagila Baltabaeva burst into. She called the police, and Gulzada and Zhanar were detained. The Almaty PD explained that they received a message from a local resident "about an illegal event."
- On February 14, representatives of the Rahym public foundation also tried to break down the door of the hotel where the Feminita event was taking place.
