Former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yul's Arrest Has Been Lifted

A South Korean court has released impeached former South Korean President Yun Seok-yol from custody. The court granted a motion to lift his arrest for briefly imposing martial law, Yonhap reported , as well as CNN , citing the court's ruling.

The politician filed a lawsuit in the Seoul Central District Court in February, arguing that his indictment over the Dec. 3 declaration of martial law was illegal. The court did not dismiss criminal charges of sedition, and the impeachment case is still pending before the Constitutional Court.

The president's lawyers have called for his immediate release, but prosecutors may appeal.

"Despite the court's decision to cancel the detention, the release will not happen immediately. The Central District Prosecutor's Office can appeal within seven days, he will be released if they refuse the appeal or do not exercise the right within the deadline," said lawyer Seok Dong-hyun.

Recall that in January, Yun Seok-yel became the first sitting president of South Korea to be arrested by the police.
