Birth control pills for men developed in the US

Scientists from the American companies YourChoice and Quotient Sciences shared the positive results of the non-hormonal contraceptive for men. According to them, the technology is safe and allows for easy return to conception. This is reported by The Sun.

How does this work

The drug YCT-529 could be the first male contraceptive in pill form. The technology targets a specific protein without damaging the body's functions. Elements of the drug block access to vitamin A, which is responsible for sperm production and fertility. Researchers say it does not cause vitamin deficiency or permanent infertility.

Currently, a group of 50 men aged 28 to 70 years are taking the tablets in a test format. The first course will last 28 days. Then the scientists will announce the results. The second stage of the study will begin in the second quarter of 2025.

Previously, the drug was tested on mice and primate monkeys. Studies on male mice – they were given 10 milligrams for four weeks – showed that YCT-529 was 99% effective. Scientists also found that the condition of temporary infertility disappears after stopping taking the pills, bypassing any negative consequences for the body.

What else is known

On the world market, among male contraceptives in the form of tablets, there are only hormonal ones, which have a large number of side effects. Thus, YCT-529 may become the first safe drug that allows men to independently control conception.

The Sun reports that researchers are also working on other male contraceptives that suppress testosterone. They are developing a gel that contains a combination of progestin and testosterone.
