The Almaty metro is testing new fences with a dual function – providing security and an advertising platform, the press service of the city akimat reports .

As reported by the metro itself, temporary fences that meet modern safety standards have been installed at the Raimbek Batyr station. They serve as a protective barrier and are used as advertising structures.

Their resistance to wind loads is currently being tested. After the tests, similar fences will appear at other stations. Previously installed iron structures will also be tested and, if necessary, dismantled.

"This is a temporary measure until automatic platform doors are installed. All work is financed by the metro without the involvement of the city budget," the Akimat reminded.

At the end of December last year, a 26-year-old blind man died in the Almaty metro – he tried to feel the entrance to the car, but fell into the space between the cars right on the rails. After this tragedy, temporary barriers appeared at metro stations – impact-resistant glass, which should close the space between the cars.

However, the new measures were criticized by Almaty residents. Social media began to spread footage of the partition covering not the space between the carriages, but the carriage itself.

Metro Director Almasbek Orynbekov said that residents captured “part of the testing process.”
